Music Together P/C Mixed-age Class

(Babies- Kindergarten)
This is the essential Music Together class, one that a child can attend from birth through age five -- and through all nine song collections. This basic class follows the recommendations of child development researchers -- grouping children of a variety of ages because this fosters natural, family-style learning. Younger children enjoy watching and imitating older ones, older children learn by leading younger ones, and adults are happy because the children in the family can go to class together. Each child participates at his or her own level in singing, moving, chanting, listening, watching, or exploring musical instruments. Any caregiver -- parents, grandparents, nanny -- can bring the children. The whole family is welcome for this important family music experience.

Creative Movement

This new class, taught by Kim Forry, will give children ages 5-7 the opportunity to experience playful movement through self-expression within a gently guided format.  Imaginations will flourish in this atmosphere of acceptance as children build a foundation of movement skills and body awareness.  Perfect for the mover in your family, class activities include space, shape, and rhythm play; stories, poetry, movement props and instrument play.

Music Together P/C- Intergenerational

Senior residents join in the fun, singing and dancing along with the children and their parents or caregivers. Infants, toddlers and kindergarteners get a chance to befriend older folks in the neighborhood. Atria Manresa is a lovely facility overlooking the Severn River in Annapolis, on the opposite side of the bridge from the Naval Academy. We just completed our first year at Atria and are happy to continue bringing the joy of family music making to this senior community, and for families to have an opportunity to participate in this rich musical experience.

Music Together Guitar Class for Grown-ups

Originally created as a class for parents with children in our parent/child classes, this class has now expanded to include other grown-ups in the life of your child.  It is therefore open to grandparents, and nannies, as well as mom and dad.  This class is designed to help facilitate family music making, and uses modified chords to allow easy access to the instrument.

Adults, who have children currently enrolled in a parent-child class, learn in a fun group setting using song material from the current collection. Students learn to hear chord changes as well as reading chord charts. The tuition for the eight week session includes a supplemental workbook.

Violin Blast-Off

This class was formed in response to requests from families who had aged out of MTparent/child classes. The approach is very focused on the young child, and incorporates elements from a few different music education methodologies.  Classes are for children ages 5-7 and are divided by level: Level I, the beginner class meets weekly for 45 minutes, and Level II, for advanced beginners meets for one hour.  While not required, two years of MT parent/child classes, or the equivalent, are recommended prior to taking this class. In this exciting introduction to the violin, children have the opportunity to begin learning to play the instrument with sound technique in a fun, stimulating group environment.  The instructor, Donna Willingham provides a multi-faceted approach to learning the instrument, which is sure to keep your child interested and involved.

Music Together Big Kids: ages 5-7

The next step in your child's music education, Big Kids is designed to continue your child's growth as a music-maker by developing skills which will help them transition into elementary school music programs, private instrumental, vocal, or dance study.  While parental attendance is not required, parents are welcome to attend along with their child and participate in game songs, folk dances, jam sessions, dramatic play, and more structured work in rhythm and tonality.  Classes are 60 minutes in length, and we welcome parents and younger siblings to attend for the last 10 minutes of each class.  Due to the structure of the class overall, children must be 5 years of age by the start of the semester to participate.

Music Together P/C Babies Pilot (0-8 months)

Every child’s development benefits from early exposure to music and movement. Because the early months are so important, Music Together offers two options for babies. Babies eight months and younger at the time of registration may attend a Mixed Ages Class, whether registered on their own or attending free with an older brother or sister. Babies may also take the special “Babies Class” offered as a one-semester introduction to Music Together. (This class cannot be repeated.) The music activities and materials are specially designed for parents who want to learn as much as possible about music development in babies. Meet other parents of newborns and learn some fascinating music activities you can recreate at home with your baby.
